A decadent breakfast treat featuring custard-soaked brioche with a crispy caramelized top, perfect for lazy weekend mornings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 slices of thick-cut brioche bread
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • Additional granulated sugar for caramelizing

Instructions

  1. Whisk together the eggs, heavy cream, milk, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and salt until well combined.
  2. Place the brioche slices in a shallow dish and pour the custard mixture over the bread, ensuring each slice is well soaked. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or overnight.
  3. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  4. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  5. Add the soaked brioche slices to the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  6. Transfer the cooked French toast slices to a baking dish and bake in the preheated oven for 10-15 minutes.
  7. Once baked, sprinkle a thin layer of granulated sugar over each slice and use a kitchen torch to caramelize the sugar.
  8. Serve warm, optionally topped with fresh fruit or whipped cream.

Notes

Allow the brioche to soak well for the best texture. If you don’t have a kitchen torch, use a broiler to caramelize the sugar.
