A luxurious twist on classic French toast, featuring a creamy custard interior and a caramelized sugar crust.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 slices of thick bread (like brioche or challah)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Sugar for caramelizing (about 1-2 tablespoons)
  • Fresh berries (for serving)
  • Maple syrup (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Whisk together the eggs, heavy cream, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, and salt until well combined.
  2. Layer the slices of bread in a baking dish and pour the egg mixture over the bread, ensuring each slice is soaked.
  3. Cover and let it sit in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, preferably overnight, to absorb the custard.
  4. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  5. Bake the French toast for 30-35 minutes or until set and lightly golden.
  6. Remove from the oven and sprinkle sugar evenly over the top.
  7. Using a kitchen torch, caramelize the sugar until golden brown and crunchy.
  8. Serve warm with fresh berries and a drizzle of maple syrup.

Notes

Allow the bread to soak overnight for the best flavor and texture. Use brioche or challah for optimal results.
