Indulge in the luxurious flavors of crème brûlée with this easy overnight French toast recipe that you can prepare ahead of time for a delightful breakfast.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons light corn syrup
  • 1 loaf thick-cut brioche or challah bread
  • 5 large eggs
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Create the Caramel Base: Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir in brown sugar and corn syrup until smooth. Pour this decadent mixture into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, forming the base of your delightfully sweet creation.
  2. Prep the Bread: Slice the brioche or challah bread into thick slices and arrange them over the caramel layer in the baking dish, allowing the slices to slightly overlap.
  3. Whisk the Custard: In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, heavy cream, milk, vanilla extract, and salt until everything is perfectly blended and smooth.
  4. Soak the Bread: Pour the custard evenly over the arranged bread slices, pressing down lightly to ensure every piece is soaked in the luscious mixture.
  5. Chill Overnight: Cover the baking dish and refrigerate it overnight (or at least for 8 hours).
  6. Bake to Perfection: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the dish uncovered for 35-40 minutes, or until it’s golden brown and set.
  7. Let It Cool & Serve: Once baked, let the French toast cool slightly. To serve, spoon the caramel sauce from the bottom over each portion.

Notes

For a twist, you can infuse your custard with orange zest or almond extract. Pair with fresh berries or whipped cream.
