  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Purple food coloring
  • Cream cheese frosting (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  4. Combine the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt in a separate bowl.
  5. Gradually add the dry mixture to the butter mixture, alternating with the buttermilk.
  6. Mix in the vanilla extract and purple food coloring until the desired color is achieved.
  7. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans.
  8. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  9. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks.
  10. Frost with cream cheese frosting and serve.
