Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 Mini Onions (small yellow onions or large shallots, about 23 inches in diameter)
  • 1 cup All-Purpose Flour
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 large eggs
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 1.5 cups Panko Breadcrumbs
  • Cooking Spray or Oil (avocado or olive oil spray)
  • For the Dipping Sauce:
  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon prepared horseradish
  • ½ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ¼ teaspoon paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • A tiny pinch of cayenne

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Onions: Trim off the very top of each small onion, leaving the root end intact. Peel the outer skin and make 6-8 evenly spaced cuts from the top downwards. Gently spread the petals open and soak in ice water for 15-30 minutes. Pat them dry.
  2. Set Up Your Breading Station: Combine flour and spices in one dish, whisk eggs and milk in another, and place Panko breadcrumbs in a third.
  3. Bread the Onions: Dredge an onion in seasoned flour, dip in egg wash, then coat with Panko. Repeat for all onions.
  4. Preheat Your Air Fryer: Heat to 375°F (190°C) for about 5 minutes.
  5. Air Fry the Mini Blooming Onions: Spray breaded onions lightly with oil, place in the air fryer basket, and cook for 12-18 minutes, flipping halfway.
  6. Prepare the Dipping Sauce: Whisk together the dipping sauce ingredients in a small bowl and refrigerate.
  7. Serve Immediately: Remove hot onions from the air fryer and serve with the dipping sauce.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 days. To reheat, place in the air fryer to regain crispiness. Experiment with spices for variation.
