Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup whole milk, warmed
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups apples, peeled and diced (about 2 medium apples)
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter (for sautéing)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (for icing)
  • 2 tablespoons milk (for icing)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a large mixing bowl, combine the warmed milk, granulated sugar, and yeast. Let this sit for about 5 minutes until the mixture becomes frothy.
  2. Combine ingredients: Once the yeast is frothy, add the melted butter, eggs, and salt to the mixture. Gradually add the flour while mixing until a dough begins to form.
  3. Knead the dough: Knead the dough for about 5-7 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.
  4. Let it rise: Place the kneaded dough into a greased bowl, cover it with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
  5. Prepare the apple filling: In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the diced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice. Cook for about 5-7 minutes until the apples are tender, then remove from heat and let cool.
  6. Roll out the dough: Once the dough has risen, punch it down and turn it out onto a floured surface. Roll the dough into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.
  7. Fill and roll: Spread the cooled apple mixture evenly over the rolled-out dough. Roll the dough tightly from the long side into a log.
  8. Slice the rolls: Slice the roll into 12 equal pieces and place them cut side up in a greased baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  9. Second rise: Cover the rolls and let them rise again for about 30 minutes, until they are puffy.
  10. Preheat and bake: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 20-25 minutes or until they are golden brown.
  11. Prepare the icing: While the rolls are baking, prepare the icing by whisking together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  12. Drizzle and enjoy: Once the rolls are done baking, let them cool for a few minutes before drizzling the icing generously over the top.
