A simple and comforting homemade Irish soda bread, crusty on the outside and soft on the inside, perfect for any meal.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 ¾ cups buttermilk
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Grease a baking sheet.
  2. Mix the flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar in a large bowl until combined.
  3. Create a well in the center of the mixture, pour in the buttermilk and melted butter.
  4. Stir until a soft dough forms.
  5. Knead gently on a floured surface to combine.
  6. Shape the dough into a round loaf and place on the baking sheet.
  7. Cut a deep cross into the top of the bread.
  8. Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Cool slightly before slicing and serving.

Notes

Serve warm with butter and jam. Store in a kitchen towel for up to 2 days or freeze for up to a month.
