Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 lbs Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 cup Gruyère cheese, shredded
  • 2 tablespoons fresh garlic, minced
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons butter (for greasing and flavor)
  • Salt, to taste
  • Pepper, to taste
  • Pinch of nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 2-quart baking dish with butter or oil to prevent sticking.
  2. Wash and peel your potatoes, then slice them thinly (about 1/8 inch thick).
  3. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add the minced garlic and sauté until fragrant (about 1 minute).
  4. Pour in 2 cups of heavy cream, mixing well. Season with salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg. Allow this to simmer gently for a couple of minutes.
  5. Arrange a layer of sliced potatoes in the greased baking dish, slightly overlapping each slice.
  6. Pour a portion of the garlic cream over the potatoes, followed by a sprinkle of cheese.
  7. Repeat this layering process until all potatoes and cream are used, finishing with a generous layer of cheese on top.
  8. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  9. After 45 minutes, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.
  10. Once out of the oven, let the gratin cool for about 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

This dish pairs beautifully with roasted meats or fresh greens dressed in a light vinaigrette.
