A warm and comforting stuffing recipe that brings family together, filled with aromatic herbs and vegetables.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 cups stale white bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons butter, divided
  • 1 large yellow or white onion, chopped
  • 2 cups celery, chopped
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon poultry seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon marjoram
  • 3 tablespoons fresh sage, chopped
  • 1/3 cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup chicken broth or stock

Instructions

  1. Prepare bread by cutting stale bread into 1-inch cubes. If your bread isn’t stale, spread the cubes on baking sheets and bake at 250°F (120°C) for 15-20 minutes until dry; cool completely.
  2. Sauté aromatics by melting 3/4 cup butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add chopped onion and celery; sauté for 8-10 minutes until soft and translucent.
  3. Add herbs and spices, stirring in fresh sage, marjoram, kosher salt, black pepper, and poultry seasoning. Cook for another 2-3 minutes until fragrant.
  4. Combine ingredients by transferring the aromatic butter mixture to a very large bowl with the bread cubes. Add fresh parsley and lightly beaten eggs. Toss gently to coat all ingredients evenly.
  5. Moisten with broth by gradually pouring in the warm chicken broth, tossing gently after each addition, until the bread is thoroughly moistened but not soggy. Adjust the consistency to your preference.
  6. Prepare for baking by tasting and adjusting seasoning as needed. Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with the remaining 2 tablespoons butter. Transfer the stuffing mixture to the dish, spreading it evenly without compacting too much.
  7. Bake covered by preheating the oven to 375°F (190°C). Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes to ensure a moist interior.
  8. Bake uncovered by removing the foil and continuing to bake for another 20-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crispy, and the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).
  9. Rest and serve by removing the stuffing from the oven and letting it rest for 10-15 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley or sage, if desired.

Notes

Leftover stuffing can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days and can be frozen for up to 3 months. For variations, try adding diced apples or sautéed mushrooms.
