Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • Chocolate frosting (for layering and topping)
  • Chocolate shavings or chips (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Combine the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl.
  3. Add in the eggs, whole milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry mixture and beat on medium speed for about 2 minutes.
  4. Stir in the boiling water (the batter will be thin).
  5. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes in the pans before transferring to wire racks.
  6. Frost the top of one cake layer with chocolate frosting, then place the second layer on top and frost the top and sides.
  7. Garnish with chocolate shavings or chips if desired, then slice and serve.
