A delightful treat, homemade gelato allows for customization of flavors and is easy to make.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • Optional: Flavorings (e.g., cocoa powder, fruit purees)

Instructions

  1. Combine the milk, cream, and sugar in a medium saucepan. Heat over medium heat until the sugar dissolves, but do not let it boil.
  2. Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and salt. Let the mixture cool to room temperature.
  3. If you want to add any flavorings, mix them in now.
  4. Pour the mixture into an ice cream maker and churn according to the manufacturer’s instructions until it thickens (this usually takes about 20-25 minutes).
  5. Transfer the gelato to a container and freeze it for at least 240 minutes before serving.

Notes

For a creamier texture, do not over-churn the gelato. Let it sit at room temperature for a few minutes before scooping to soften slightly.
