Delicious homemade soft pretzels, perfect for snacking any time of the day.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1 large egg
  • Coarse sea salt for sprinkling

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm water and let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Mix the dough: Add in the flour and salt, mixing until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough: Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth.
  4. Let the dough rise: Let the dough rise in a greased bowl for 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
  5. Preheat the oven: Preheat oven to 450°F (232°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  6. Shape the pretzels: Divide the dough into 8 pieces and roll each piece into a long rope. Shape each rope into a pretzel.
  7. Prepare the boiling bath: In a pot, boil water and add baking soda. Briefly dip each pretzel in the boiling water.
  8. Prep for baking: Place on the baking sheet, brush with beaten egg, and sprinkle with coarse salt.
  9. Bake to perfection: Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
  10. Cool and enjoy: Allow to cool and serve warm.

Notes

Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. To keep them fresh longer, pop them in the fridge for up to a week. Just reheat in the oven for a few minutes to regain that delectable crunch.
