A delightful and easy-to-make quick bread, Irish Soda Bread is the quintessential comfort food with a beautifully crusty exterior and soft interior, perfect for any meal.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 3/4 cups buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup melted butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Mix together the flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar in a large bowl.
  3. Make a well in the center of the flour mixture. Pour in the buttermilk and melted butter.
  4. Stir the mixture until a dough starts to form.
  5. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead gently for about 1 minute.
  6. Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  7. Cut a cross on top of the dough.
  8. Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped underneath.
  9. Let the bread cool before slicing. Serve warm with butter and jam.

Notes

For a heartier loaf, you can use half whole wheat flour. Store leftovers wrapped in a kitchen towel at room temperature for up to 2 days.
