Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • Optional: chocolate chips, berries, nuts, cheese, or herbs

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Cut in the cubed butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Mix together the milk and egg until well combined.
  5. Combine the wet ingredients with the dry ingredients and stir until just combined.
  6. Add your choice of optional add-ins.
  7. Knead the dough on a floured surface until it comes together.
  8. Shape the dough into a circle about 1 inch thick and cut into wedges.
  9. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
  10. Cool slightly before serving.
