A delightful twist on a classic grilled cheese sandwich featuring sharp cheddar, caramelized onions, apples, and pears.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 slices sourdough bread
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided
  • 1 medium pear, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium apple, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
  • Salt (to taste)
  • Black pepper (to taste)

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the onions by melting 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and a pinch of salt, cooking for about 10 minutes until golden brown and softened. Add the balsamic vinegar and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
  2. Melt the remaining tablespoon of butter in the same skillet over medium heat.
  3. Layer the grilled cheese on two slices of sourdough, starting with half of the cheddar cheese, followed by the caramelized onions, apple slices, pear slices, and topping with the remaining cheddar cheese before covering with the other slices of bread.
  4. Grill one sandwich in the skillet for about 4-5 minutes on one side until golden brown. Turn using a spatula and grill the other side for another 4-5 minutes until the cheese melts.
  5. Repeat the grilling process for the second sandwich.
  6. Cool slightly before slicing and serve warm.

Notes

Serve with a bowl of hearty tomato soup or a simple green salad. Pair with apple cider or white wine.
