A simple yet delicious Bolognese sauce, perfect for a weeknight dinner or cozy Sundays.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb Italian sausage
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 carrot, diced
  • 1 celery stalk, diced
  • 1 cup red wine
  • 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Pasta of your choice, cooked

Instructions

  1. Browning the sausage: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the Italian sausage until browned. Make sure to break it up as it cooks for even browning. Once it’s perfectly golden, drain any excess fat.
  2. Add the diced onion, minced garlic, diced carrot, and celery to the skillet. Cook until the vegetables are softened, and the onion is translucent.
  3. Pour in the red wine! Let it simmer for a few minutes to add complexity and depth.
  4. Stir in the crushed tomatoes and tomato paste. Add in the dried oregano, basil, and season with salt and pepper.
  5. Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for at least 30 minutes for optimal flavor.
  6. Serve the sauce ladled over your preferred cooked pasta and garnish with Parmesan cheese if desired.

Notes

For added richness, stir in grated Parmesan or a splash of cream before serving.
