A rich, chocolatey Texas Sheet Cake that’s perfect for gatherings, featuring a moist cake topped with velvety frosting.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a large sheet pan.
  2. Combine the butter, water, and cocoa powder in a saucepan, bring to a boil while stirring occasionally.
  3. Mix together the flour, sugar, salt, and baking soda in a large bowl.
  4. Pour the hot cocoa mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until combined.
  5. Beat in the eggs, buttermilk, and vanilla until smooth.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 20-25 minutes.
  7. Prepare the frosting by combining 1 cup of butter, 1/2 cup of cocoa, and 1/3 cup of milk in another saucepan and bringing to a boil.
  8. Remove from heat and whisk in 4 cups of powdered sugar and 1 teaspoon of vanilla.
  9. Pour the warm frosting over the cake as soon as it comes out of the oven.
  10. Allow the cake to cool in the pan before slicing and serving.

Notes

For added flavor, consider mixing in chopped nuts or mini chocolate chips.
