A rich and moist chocolate cake topped with a luscious chocolate icing, perfect for gatherings and celebrations.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a large sheet pan.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt. Stir well.
  3. Melt the butter and water together in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then remove from heat and stir in cocoa powder.
  4. Whisk together buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla extract in a separate bowl. Combine with the cocoa mixture and dry ingredients until smooth.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. For the icing, heat butter, cocoa powder, and milk until melted. Remove from heat and stir in powdered sugar and vanilla until glossy.
  7. While the cake is warm, pour the icing over top and allow to cool completely before slicing.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or in the refrigerator for up to a week.
