  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon powdered sugar (for dusting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a large sheet pan.
  2. Whisk together flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl.
  3. Bring the butter and water to a boil in a saucepan.
  4. Combine the boiling mixture with the dry ingredients and stir to combine.
  5. Mix in buttermilk, eggs, vanilla, and cocoa powder until smooth.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared sheet pan and bake for 20-25 minutes.
  7. Allow to cool before dusting with powdered sugar or frosting as desired.
